2019 Newsome Vineyards Pinot Grigio

This was a Texas Wine Club selection. (website) I paired it with H-E-B’s meal simple seafood stuffed salmon and asparagus on a weeknight. The picture does not do it justice. Newsome Vineyards tasting room is located in Comfort, Texas, but the vineyards are in the Texas High Plains. (website)

The wine had a light nectarine scent with a little honey. It was sweeter than I expected, but had a spiciness to the finish. It was kinda tart. I’d describe it as a sweet tart, but not as sugary.

The salmon sweetened the wine, but not in a cloying way (like how the blue hair brigade’s perfume is on any given Sunday). The salmon brought out the stone fruit flavor. The asparagus brings out the tart – but in a good way. I find too many wines go acidic with asparagus, but not this one.

Final Thoughts

I’m grateful to the Texas Wine Club for introducing me to Newsome Vineyards. They have some great wine that’s perfect for pairing with weeknight meals. Is it cheating to do meal simple from H-E-B? Well, my Southern Grandmother would say it is… However, I’d point out that if it was up to me to cook after some long days (especially Tuesdays), it would be cereal and that really does not pair with wine. Or does it?
