The winner of Wednesday night game of “What’s in the Cellar?” It’s an Italian wine, we’re having baked ricotta stuffed shells in a light tomato sauce.
To be honest, I’m not sure where we got this wine. I suspect it was a gift from friends in 2018 – the last time we could all get together before Covid.
Whoever gave us this wine made an amazing choice. I probably wouldn’t have bought it as I tend toward either southern wine or labels that catch my attention. However this red “blend” was amazing.
Upon opening you can smell the residual sugar, with a hint of spice.
The first taste was that of caramelized sugar and allspice.
It was actually wasted on the cheese stuffed shells that were for dinner. They really needed something like an average cabernet sauvignon. I really should read about the wine before I just open them (more)….
Final Thoughts
I actually liked this wine better on its own, and having opened it to only have a glass with dinner (early Thursday meeting), I decided that this date night wine was too good to waste, so settled down to some bad British mysteries and the rest of the bottle.
It’s a Goldilocks… It’s dry, but not too dry. It’s sweet, but not too sweet. It really was one where we finished the bottle and I was disappointed there wasn’t any more.
