Benovia Pinot Noir

Russian River Valley – 2018 – La Pommerie

I honestly don’t remember if this was a gift or if we won it at a wine dinner – but it was toward the front of the bottles on the wine shelf, so it was one that I perused when picking a wine for dinner.

Tonight was “leftovers.” Basically the leftover chili rubbed ribeye from the wine dinner was cubed and skilleted until the edges were crisp, some mushrooms added, and then the traditional southern casserole mixer – Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup. (I didn’t have any sour cream to make stroganoff the right way.)

Needless to say when the wine was first opened I wasn’t sure if it was any good. It was at first taste a Monday wine, at best. But, let it breathe while finishing the improvised stroganoff and then tried it. Not bad for a Monday.

It honestly went well with the main course. Probably would be better with just a steak or maybe a grilled chicken breast with a hefty side like a mushroom risotto.

Looked it up – it’s in the Thursday to Saturday price range. And my husband says its more of a Thursday wine.

Honestly, I wanted something sweet after dinner and decided to finish the fig newtons. The wine went surprisingly well with them. I suppose I should be embarrassed to admit to that, but let’s face it ladies – this is the ultimate pre-divorce, I’m drinking everything good from the cellar before he can claim it type of wine.

Final Thoughts

It didn’t make Wine Enthusiast’s 2022 top 10 Favorite Pinot Noirs from the Russian River Valley list, but it’s still a good wine. It’s high on the price range so it’s definitely a liquor store buy, but worth the trip.

So, while our Monday night dinner date together started out rough with a question of if it was good enough or not, by the time dessert was done, I knew this was a wine I could revisit again for another dinner date – but maybe more on a Thursday.
